  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) – ~3.5–4 hours drive (230 miles)
  • Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) – ~4.5–5 hours drive (275 miles)
  • Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) – ~1.5 hours drive (80 miles)
    Flagstaff is the best option if you want a short drive and a scenic route.

Most visitors rent a car for flexibility — especially if you plan to explore sunrise viewpoints, nearby towns, or continue to the North Rim.

  • Williams, AZ – (60 miles away) a charming Route 66 town with dining and train access to the canyon.

Always remember! Hiking into the canyon is optional — hiking out is mandatory. Plan double the time for the ascent back out of the canyon and carry at least 3 liters of water per person in warm months.

What to Pack for Your South Rim Adventure

The South Rim’s weather varies wildly between day and night — even in summer. Bring layers! And snacks.

Essentials:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes (boots or shoes, depending on your comfort level)
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (UV is strong, very little shade)
  • Refillable water bottles or hydration pack
  • Snacks and electrolytes
  • Lightweight jacket (temperatures can drop below 40°F in the evening)

  • Camera or binoculars (everyone should tourist out!)

Bring a small daypack with hydration and layers, even for short hikes. Weather changes fast. Just have it stashed in your car at all times and reload snacks as needed. It’s great to have the flexibility to grab it when you see a hike you want to do.

How much does it cost to enter the park?

Are pets allowed?

Leashed pets are allowed on paved Rim Trail sections but not below the rim. Refer to the map for a more detailed explaination.

Is there cell service?

Limited. Verizon has the best coverage; Wi-Fi is available near visitor centers, but can be choppy and unreliable. Best to unplug!

How early should I book accommodations?

For summer or holidays — at least six months ahead; Phantom Ranch requires lottery reservations.
