Medium
Last year, 15 women who had never run an ultra spent six months getting to a 50k start line. 10 finished. Not one of them said she’d have tried it alone. The Cairn Project is doing it again, twice over. 36 women across two cohorts: a first 50k and a first trail half, both at Wild Woman Trail Runs in June 2027. Coaching, a training plan, gear, race entry, and 35 other women doing the same hard thing. Applications close December 28. cairnproject.org/trail-running-sisterhood-2027
Long
Women make up 10 to 30 percent of most ultra fields. Not because they can’t, but because starting is the barrier. In 2026, The Cairn Project took 15 women who had never run an ultra and gave them six months of coaching, gear, storytelling support and each other. 10 finished the 50k. One finished the relay. One made the call to stop partway and was cheered just as hard, and she’s coming back this year. Afterwards, every one of them described the change in terms of identity rather than finish times. Not one said she’d have been likely to attempt a 50k on her own. 10 of 11 volunteered to come back and mentor the next group. For 2027 it’s 36 women across two cohorts, a first 50k and a first trail half, racing one weekend at Wild Woman Trail Runs in Trout Lake, Washington. Each woman raises $1,000 for The Cairn Project along the way. Applications are open now and close December 28. cairnproject.org/trail-running-sisterhood-2027
