About makeSPACE

makeSPACE: Spearfish Partnership for Arts, Cycling and Equity was founded with a mission to provide space for all members of the Spearfish, South Dakota community to enjoy a just, healthy, and art-filled life. All programming at makeSPACE is offered on a sliding scale, meaning no one is refused participation, and the organization works with partners to recruit at least half of its participants from underserved communities.

“We want to do more than just encourage participants to ride bikes. We want to arm them with the tools they need to grow confidence, self-love, and an “I can do anything” attitude.”

New Cycling Program in Spearfish

Support from The Cairn Project will continue support to a brand new gravel, mountain, and road cycling program for young women, girls, and LGBTQIA+ participants. Funding will support Mountain Bike Instructor Certification for program leaders who will be offering skills lessons, bike maintenance events, trail maintenance demonstrations, group rides, and backcountry travel. This grant will also be leveraged toward clinics, summer camps, instructors and support staff time. Based on learning from its inaugural summer, makeSPACE will expand its offerings to include a “Learn to Ride” bike program for girls who haven’t had any opportunities to try biking before!
