With programs that get young women out backpacking, hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing in the Northern California wilderness, GirlVentures nurtures self-esteem and resilience, empowering confident young women who are conservationists and compassionate allies to each other. Difficult outdoor activities provide the format and structure through which girls develop physical, emotional, and social tools that help them navigate adventure and challenge – in the outdoors, and in their homes and communities.

A $5K grant from The Cairn Project will support one-day and overnight outdoor experiences for girls of color in the Bay Area. A five-day spring break course in Point Reyes National Seashore will bring 8-10 high school girls together for kayaking, camping, and mentorship, creating space for healing and collaboration. As part of its evolving pandemic-adapted programming, GirlVentures will also partner with other Bay Area nonprofits serving girls of color to deliver at least three one day retreats melding kayaking, rock climbing, and hiking with leadership and social-emotional learning curriculum.
